Award Winning Storytelling
Unconventional Attitudes is a one hour storytelling performance. It won the Buxton Fringe Festival Spoken Word Award in 2012 and was nominated for the New Writing Award at the same festival.
Unconventional Attitudes comprises five imaginary snapshot scenes, based on the historical accounts and letters of Emma Hamilton. These are combined with the stories of four Greek Goddesses, with an emphasis on the female experience and voice in each myth. Dramatic episodes from Emma's life are reflected in the parallel journeys of the abandoned Ariadne, the pining Thetis, the lustful Aphrodite and the enchanting Circe.
Original writing is complemented by excerpts of Lady Hamilton's writing and contemporary song. The piece draws on the historical accounts of Walter Sichel, the fictional history of Amanda Elyot and is inspired by the plays of Timberlake Wertenbaker, in particular Love of the Nightingale, Tori Amos' album American Doll Posse, and the poetry of Hilda Doolittle.
Audience feedback:
"I thought the performance was exquisite, I wouldn’t change a thing. I’m so glad I came."
"A thoroughly enjoyable performance. Extremely well presented and performed. A real Joy!!"
